The role of a Dental Hygienist is mainly about prevention of oral and related diseases and this is a big part of the appeal of the job. By getting rid of plaque, bacteria, polishing teeth and other actions, the hygienist helps to prevent abscesses, infections and fillings. Hygienists are also able to improve the look of patients' teeth.

Skill Requirements:
You need to really understand what motivates different patients and use this to ensure they change their habits. There's a strong psychological component to this job. You also need to have the ability to make patients feel comfortable.
Typical Career Path:
Other than taking time out to study and become a Dentist (probably anoher 4 years of study), you could consider becoming a Dental Therapist. This is a new role - think of it is as being a mini - dentist. Dental therapists will do extractions, fillings and other procedures mainly with children.
How to get into this career ?
A lot of hygienists will have started as dental nurses and then moved into this role after further study. Alternatively, you can enter the career directly after studying a dental hygienist course. You will need to be registered with the British Dental Association to be able to practice.
School Subject Requirements
You'll need decent (but not outstanding) A levels. Biology, Chemistry and any other sciences will be useful.
Uni/College Requirements
The Dental Hygienist course is 2 and a half to 3 years full time. You'll need to be qualified to register as a hygienist.
