Notary Public as a Career Choice? Get Help to Choose the Right Career.

In a Nutshell

Career Choices

A Notary Public facilitates a wide range of international transactions by authenticating related documents. The process of verifying and authenticating documents gives them the required legal status in the other country involved.  Examples include people living in the UK who want to get married abroad, buying property abroad and a range of business transactions.

The Good

Career Choices
  • The wide range of work and issues makes it interesting
  • You meet a wide range of people working with a number of foreign countries
  • There's no (upper) age limit to your involvement
  • Finding out the requirements of other countries is challenging

The Bad

Career Choices
  • This is unlikely to be a full time job. For most solicitors, it's an add on role
  • The fee income is variable

Typical Career Path:

Career Choices
Unless you work in a specialised firm of notary publics (of which there are very few), you will start as a solicitor. After gaining a good base of experience, you can take the notarial exams and then practice as a notary public. If you're in a specialised firm of notaries, the career options are somewhat limited, so make sure this is the aspect of law you really enjoy. You will find it difficult to move back into general practice if you specialise as a notary from the start.

Academic requirements are the same as becoming a solicitor. You will need to complete your initial law degree, qualify as a solicitor and after gaining experience, complete the notarial exams. If you are fluent in one of more foreign languages, this will be a major asset if you wish to specialise immediately after completing your law degree.

School Subject Requirements
