This can include practicing washing and dressing, meal preparation, mobility, transfers and assessing patient’s home environment to prescribe adaptive equipment. The aim is to maximise the patient’s independence and safety for return to their normal daily living.

Starting as an OT assistant, you can progress to OT technical instructor and ultimately to OT if you’re able to achieve a degree part or full -  time

How to get into this career ?

Career Choices

It’s more about who you are as a person that what you’ve achieved academically. Any experience you have as a volunteer in a care home or similar will help your application. There is typically a shortage of Occupational Therapists and that’s a good incentive to qualify as an OT.

School Subject Requirements

GCSE in maths and English (5 passes required).

Uni/College Requirements

No requirement for any formal qualification, although a Foundation degree in rehabilitation therapy – 2 years would be advantageous.

Alternative routes

Foreign national waiting for certification of their qualifications by the Health Professions Council will often work as OTA’s during this period.
