A Quantity Surveyor manages and controls costs within construction projects using a range of management procedures and technical tools. A QS will be involved from evaluation and feasibility of a project to tendering for potential suppliers, contract negotiation and implementation of the project. Extensive client liaison is required.

Typical Career Path:
Start as a junior or assistant QS. After 4 - 5 years become a QS, then senior QS and then a commercial manager. You don't have to be chartered although it will be useful.
How to get into this career ?
Do a degree in Quantity Surveying. In normal economic conditions, there's a strong demand for students with these qualifications. Becoming chartered requries demonstrating your competence through a portfolio as well as interview assessment. You will need a minimum of 2 years experience prior to commencing your application.
School Subject Requirements
To enter Uni for a degree, you'll need good A levels with maths. Entry for NVQ qualifications will typically require GCSE's or equivalent
Uni/College Requirements
BSc in construction Quantity Surveying (3 years). A range of NVQ programmes are available
