Sustainability consultants work with organisations to improve their sustainability credentials by helping to reduce their impact on the environment and community in a cost effective way. You'll work with design engineers at the beginning of projects as well as contributing at other project stages. There is a management consultancy part to this role as at times you will need to advise clients on how to change the behaviour of their staff on environmental matters. As far as environmental roles go, this is a generalist role.

You will need to have a broad knowledge over all of the environmental specialisations and the ability to influence effectively.

Typical Career Path:

Startging as a graduate, after a year or 2, you will become a sustainability consultant. Most spend about 3 years at this level before becoming a senior consultant and another 3 before becoming a principal. At this point. you ar elikely to ahve 3 options:- move into management, become a project manager or develop specialist expertise further. 

How to get into this career ?

Career Choices

You will need either a 4 year degree and industrial placement or a Masters degree to be considered. As this is a generalist role, you could potentially enter the role with a business qualification rather than an environmental specific degree.

School Subject Requirements

Good A levels with Geography and Environmental Science if offered.

Uni/College Requirements

Either a 4 year degree in Business or Environmental Science or a Masters degree. Many emnployers are favouring the Masters as an entry level requirement.  

Alternative routes

It is possible to start work in another function and move across into this role, however you are almost certain to need to study part time (often with your employer's assistance) to be successful.
