Choosing a career - useful resources

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How do I get to speak to people in different careers?
Sounds like you’re being proactive! Even though you may not realise it, you’ve already got a decent network to use. Think of your parents’ friends and your friends’ parents. Put a list together and you’ll be surprised at how many people you can approach. Register here for tools and tips to help you build your network.
  2. Which career is right for me?
That’s a tough one because we don’t know you (yet)! The place to start is to get to know yourself first – what motivates you, what interests you and what you can be good at. Then you can start trying to match that to possible careers. Register here and there are plenty of resources to help you with these decisions.
  3. What’s the difference between a career and a job?
For some people, not a lot! Tomorrow’s world of work will have even more change than today’s. It might be more useful to think of sets of skills rather than “being an X or a Y”. Having said that, a job is something you do with a short term mindset to pay the bills. A career is something you do because you’re interested in it. If you can be passionate about it - even better.   4. What new careers are emerging that I can look at?
Plenty. There are quite a few roles around that didn’t exist 10 years ago. A lot of these are to be found in web and social media marketing as well as “green” careers. Check out the video in career trends. First though, you’ll need to register.
  5. How do I research what a career is about?
Many people focus on a certain career option without any real idea of what its all about. You need to know what’s good about a certain career, what’s bad, what are the important skills required. You can find a lot of that in our career choices section
